The current Australian Political Preference System
Although Australia possesses a largely English based legal and education system, we possess anomalies not found in our system�s creators. Australia (unlike England) possesses the PREFERENCE system - which works as follows : -
At an election, there are three candidates : -
� One Nation � Labor � Liberal
They receive Votes, i.e. a No.1 against each candidate�s name. So the result may end like this : -
� One Nation 22,000 � Labor 14,000 � Liberal 10,000
The One Nation candidate is by far (almost double) the most popular candidate right ?
So they win the seat right ? WRONG !!
The preference system means that in Australia we ELIMINATE the person who comes LAST (i.e. Liberal 10,000) and REALLOCATE their votes according to their preference - i.e. Liberal can give ALL 10,000 votes to Labor and thus the final result is : -
� One Nation 22,000
� Labor 24,000 (14,000 + 10,000)
The LABOR candidate has just won with under 33% of the PRIMARY vote.
This is how Pauline Hanson lost her seat of Blair and how One Nation receives 10% of the vote (more than 2x Democrat, 4x Green) and yet the Democrats have 10 Senators, and we have 1 !!!
This dodgy system means that Labor and Liberal can get elected on LESS than 33% of the vote BUT One Nation MUST get at LEAST 51% to win a single seat - THIS IS YOUR POLITICAL SYSTEM! IS THIS DEMOCRACY ??
